MONTARA STATE BEACH

I had to fly up to San Francisco for business.  When this happens, I try to schedule my meetings around the weekend so I can go up the day before and at least turn half of the business trip into a surf trip.

We checked out some spots in HALF MOON BAY.

Not finding much in the way of waves at these spots, we proceeded north.  At a curve in the road, some waves we spotted in the distance forced us to abruptly pull over.

The waves breaking here were much bigger and actually yielded a few fun rides.

Unlike the other breaks in the area, the high tide did not shut down this beach.

Instead, the excess water caused some nice refraction that caused the waves to jack themselves up and break bigger and steeper.

The other nice thing about the session was how late it lasted, the NorCal sun being able to stay up till past 9 PM in the summertime.
