This was supposed to be the best day of the week. The waves were almost decent - but at least it was nice to get out there under the blue sky and see a dolphin or two. Here's waiting for the next real swell. There may have been some decent waves elsewhere, but these small swells seem to pass by Scripps pretty often.
The much anticipated Santa Ana winds were completely non-existent. Had these been blowing - the waves probably would have held up, stayed open, and been pretty awesome.

High tide kills it. Super slow waves - though they did stay somewhat open after finally breaking.
There was no surf.
Instead - we found concrete waves at the Coronado Skate Park:
I also worked on some moved with this surfer in training. Here she is practicing sitting up on her surfboard.
Here she is working on going backside.

The waves were super clean but generally too small to stay open enough to do anything on them.
I marveled at the fact that the water was so clear that I could see individual seashells lying on the bottom of the ocean, along with kelp swaying back and forth. Sitting on my board out there the water was so clear I felt like I was snorkeling without the burden of having to hold my breath.
I may not have had great waves to look forward to but I was definitely entertained by watching the life under the water, including schools of fish that seemed like they were just as amused looking back up at me out of the water.

Tide rising until hi at 10:30 AM
I had some buyer's remorse at first paddling out at the jetties because I am so used to the pier. I was thinking, why did I not paddle out over there where I know how the waves break. My concerns will quickly dispelled.
The waves broke fast but stayed open. Before I knew it, I was either face to face with the rocks of the jetty or in ankle deep water on the shore. Today's conditions are how it always should be - so excellent.
The waves definitely slowed down as the tide rose, but there was still enough energy to deliver plenty of consistent rides.

Poor to fair
Head High
High Tide at 8 PM
The size was nice - virtually all the worthwhile waves were breaking left. I had the honor of being the last one in the water that night. The last wave was caught under a full moon. The white light sparkled radiantly as I rode in.

Waist to Shoulder High
High tide at 8 AM
Waves had much better shape - definitely more open. The only drawback was the long wait between sets. On the plus side, the wind did not play a factor, even 2 hours into the session.

Good
The water was so glassy it reflected almost perfectly back off of the sky. The smooth, metallic sheen over the water barely showed any movement, making it difficult to discern when waves were coming.
Super clean, very open - great waves breaking in both directions all the way to shore.
By way of comparison - September 26, Monday - SCRIPPS - pretty fun and clean, but smaller and not as open.
September 25, Sunday - PB DRIVE - stormy, murky water, shoulder high - bumpy but good shape.
September 23, Friday night - BLACKS - stormy, murky water, bumpy, head high - too rough and not open enough
September 23, Friday morning - SCRIPPS - not that good.
All in all - a great few days of surfing.
Flat waves so went to Robb Field instead. Working on dropping-in.
